About Kairouan
Kairouan is one of the most important historical and religious cities in Tunisia and in the Islamic world. It is located in central Tunisia and is widely known as a center of Islamic learning and culture. Founded in 670 AD by the Arab general Uqba ibn Nafi, Kairouan played a major role in the spread of Islam across North Africa.
The city’s most famous landmark is the Great Mosque of Kairouan (also known as the Mosque of Uqba). It is one of the oldest and most significant mosques in the Islamic world and is admired for its impressive architecture, large courtyard, and massive minaret. For centuries, the mosque served as a major center for religious education and scholarship.
Kairouan’s Medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and reflects the city’s rich cultural heritage. The Medina features traditional houses, narrow streets, ancient walls, and lively markets. The city is also famous for its handmade carpets, which are considered among the finest in Tunisia and are an important part of the local economy.
Unlike coastal cities, Kairouan is not a tourist resort, but it attracts visitors interested in history, religion, and culture. It holds a special spiritual importance, and for many Muslims, it is considered one of the holiest cities in Islam.
Today, Kairouan remains a symbol of Tunisia’s Islamic identity and historical depth. Its well-preserved monuments, religious significance, and traditional lifestyle make it a unique and respected city in the country’s cultural landscape.
